Is your Windows 11 computer crawling along like it forgot it used to be fast? Don't worry — you haven't broken anything, and you almost certainly don't need to buy a new PC. In most cases, a sluggish Windows 11 machine just needs a good tidy-up, and you can do it yourself in about ten minutes. Here's exactly how. First, let's understand why this happens. Over time, Windows quietly piles up temporary files, old updates, and bits of data from apps you've already deleted. All that digital clutter takes up space on your hard drive and can slow everything down. Clearing it out gives Windows room to breathe again. Step 1 — Run Storage Sense Windows 11 has a built-in cleaner called Storage Sense that does a lot of the hard work for you. 1. Click the Start button (the Windows logo at the bottom of your screen). 2. Click the Settings cog icon. 3. Select System, then click Storage. 4. Click the button that says Cleanup recommendations. 5. Tick all the boxes that appear (things like Temporary files and items in your Recycle Bin). 6. Click Clean up and let Windows do its thing. This alone can free up several gigabytes in just a couple of minutes. Step 2 — Empty Your Recycle Bin It sounds obvious, but most people forget this one. Every file you delete sits in the Recycle Bin taking up space until you empty it. Right-click the Recycle Bin icon on your desktop and choose Empty Recycle Bin. Done. Step 3 — Uninstall Apps You Never Use Old apps you downloaded once and never touched again are quietly hogging space. 1. Open Settings again. 2. Go to Apps, then Installed apps. 3. Scroll through the list. For anything you don't recognise or haven't used in ages, click the three dots next to it and select Uninstall. If you're unsure what something is, a quick internet search of its name will tell you whether it's safe to remove. Step 4 — Restart Your PC Properly A lot of people just close the lid of their laptop or put their PC to sleep. Windows 11 works much better with an occasional proper restart. Click Start, then the Power button, and choose Restart (not Shut Down). This clears out temporary memory and lets Windows start fresh. Step 5 — Check What's Running in the Background Some apps sneakily start themselves every time you turn your computer on, even if you never asked them to. 1. Right-click on the taskbar (the bar along the bottom of your screen). 2. Select Task Manager. 3. Click the Startup apps tab. 4. If you see apps you don't need straight away when you start up (things like Spotify or Zoom), right-click them and choose Disable. They'll still work when you open them — they just won't load automatically. After following all these steps, restart your PC one more time and you should notice a genuine improvement. Pages will load faster, apps will open more quickly, and everything should feel a bit snappier. If you've tried all of this and your PC is still struggling, there may be something else going on — like a programme quietly using too many resources, or a settings tweak that could help your specific machine.
